Play a fifth. Watch warm meet cool.

Every note owns a pigment, and the pigments are arranged around the circle of fifths rather than the chromatic scale, with warm and cool strictly alternating. That single decision has an exact consequence: an interval one step around the ring, like a fifth, always pairs a warm pigment with a cool one, which is what marbles. A tritone is six steps, lands back on the same side of the alternation, and gives you two pigments with nothing to push against. Play them both and it is audible and visible at the same time.

Play a chord

C · G: One step apart on the ring, so one pigment is cool and the other warm. That contrast is what marbles.

Tap the notes directly to build your own. Sound plays in your browser; the colours are the app’s real pigments, mixed the way it mixes them.

Every scene is free

Four ways for the same sound to look.

Sumi

墨 · ink

Pigment marbling across warm washi, in the suminagashi tradition. Notes are drops; attacks splash.

Ito

糸 · thread

The chord drawn as one closed thread of light. A single note is a calm ellipse; a fifth braids; a tritone opens into a rosette.

Cymatics

standing waves

Every pitch vibrates the plate in its own mode and the sand gathers on the nodal lines. Sound made visible, literally.

Kumo

雲 · cloud

Smoke lit from within, on a dark ground. The same fluid as Sumi, turned up and turned inside out.
